SPECIAL EVENT
SCREENWRITING: WRITING IN PICTURES
with Patrick McCord Ph.D.
WHAT:
Thinking like a screenwriter is not like the thinking process involved in other kinds of writing. While movies may seem as infinitely various as dreams, they have an intrinsic image-based logic as well as specific structural strategies. This half-day workshop is designed to give screenwriters an understanding of the movie-image logic and how to use it with conventional structural strategies.
The following topics will be covered:
- Freeing your image-brain to work with your word-brain: write in pictures.
- Structural requirements of the screenplay.
- Understanding the shot, the scene, then linking scenes: how pictures link together.
- Bringing characters to life via imagery.
WHEN:
Saturday, July 18
9 a.m. to 12 noon
WHERE:
32 Webb Road, Westport
COST:
$55
$65 after July 1

HOW TO FIND AN AGENT (AND THE ART OF THE QUERY LETTER)
with Denise Marcil
WHAT:
A good agent does far more than sell an author's book. But do you know what an agent does for you? And how do you go about finding one?
This workshop, led by experienced literary agent Denise Marcil, president of Denise Marcil Literary Agency, Inc., will answer those two pressing questions. First, she will explain the role of literary agents: what they do, how they develop and guide the careers of writers, how they negotiate contracts, and how they advocate for their writers in negotiations with their publishers. Second, she will describe what steps writers need to take in order to secure an agent.
Participants will learn the art of the agent query letter, which is the critical first step in attracting an agent. Denise will describe the process for identifying which agents to pitch with your query letter, and how to find and contact them.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will have an opportunity to receive feedback on a sample agent query letter that they may either bring with them or draft in the workshop. Enrollment is limited to 9 to enable each participant to discuss his or her own publishing goals.
Denise Marcil, who has launched the writing careers of hundreds of authors, represents a wide variety of commercial fiction and non-fiction, from thrillers to management books. She has been an active board member of the Independent Literary Agents Association and the the Association of Author's Representatives.
