Open Mic Night
Monday, Feb 27, 7 to 9 pm
Come share your talent! Please sign up to read a selection of your work to us at our Open Mic Night. All genres including Fiction, Memoir and Poetry are welcome. Read a selection of your work to an audience of your peers and other interested listeners. Or just come to listen and be inspired.
Each reader will be allotted a maximum of 10 minutes. Please sign-up in advance by calling (203) 227-3250 to receive a time slot. Or you may sign up at the event, space permitting.
This will be a relaxed and social evening. Bring your family and friends for support, and linger afterward to meet other writers. Coffee/tea, cookies and camaraderie are on the house.
Note for clarification: The purpose of this Open Mic night is to allow writers to share written work or work-in-progress. It is not a storytelling, spoken word, or performance event.

Google Tools for Writers

Did you know that Google offers a wealth of amazing free and unadvertised products, services and programs? In this informative evening, you will gain a insider's view of Google and their products that are especially useful for writers from former Google employee Jan Kardys.
You will receive a tour of useful Google features including: Google's search features including Custom Search and Google Book Search; organizing features such as Google Calendar, Google Documents and Gmail; Blogger; and tools for composing a basic website.
You will also learn about products including Picasa; Google Earth, Directory, and Google Reader; Desktop, Chrome, Toolbar, Pack, and iGoogle; GOOG-411, Google Health, and Google Finance, as well as products to help you explore the world, upload and enjoy videos, translate languages, and communicate using tools such as Knol, Orkut, Google Groups, and Scholar.
Jan Kardys is President of Black Hawk Literary Agency, representing a broad spectrum of authors and illustrators. She was a former Director of Contracts for Warner Books/Little, Brown & Company, Director of Contracts at Macmillan Publishing Company, Charles Scribner's Sons, and Contracts Director at Prentice Hall/Simon & Schuster. Jan has worked at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Doubleday, Scholastic, Lippincott & Crowell, Publishers, St. Martin's Press, Conde Nast Publications, and Google.

Whether you have your own blog in which you review books, music, movies or restaurants; regularly submit to other review blogs; or even have lots of friends seeking out your opinions on Facebook or other social media, you may have a career ahead as a professional reviewer.

Learn how to break into the world of professional reviewing at our next inspiring and stimulating panel discussion. Panelists will share how they entered the world of professional reviewing, and suggest how you can do the same. Panelists will also discuss what it takes to write reviews that are informative, and entertaining, and in demand by readers.
About the Panelists
Susan Granger has been an on-air television and radio commentator and entertainment critic for more than 25 years. Known locally for her movie review column in the Westport News and other Connecticut newspapers, her commentaries, reviews and interviews are distributed around the world by SSG Syndicate. Her articles and reviews have appeared in hundred of publications including have been published in Working Woman, Playboy, The New York Times, Redbook, Ladies Home Journal, Family Circle, and many others.
Food writer Liz Rueven is founder and editor of the popular food blog Kosher Like Me. She has written restaurant reviews and chefs' profiles for Ctbites since its inception, focusing on organic, vegetarian and local ingredients, producers and products.. She hosts professional and community food tastings, demonstrations and events in Fairfield County and NYC.
Erica Sanders-Foege is a book publishing professional most recently with Taunton Press, where she acquired cookbooks and titles in home design, craft/fiber arts, and home reference. She has been a regular reviewer for The New York Times Book Review, Washington Post Book World, Newsday, and People magazine, among others. Her magazine editing experience includes Vanity Fair, Redbook, and Woman's Day.
Laurel Tuohy was formerly a music critic for the Danbury News Times, where she reviewed and interviewed local indie bands. She is currently the Westport Writers’ Workshop’s Social Media Strategist and a freelance journalist.
